Area 18 Winter Dressage Qualifier

December 2012
Hartpury

Evenlode Riding Club had two senior and one junior team entered for this competition at Hartpury College on the 29th December 2012. As often happens two members unfortunately could not make the competition at the last minute but for once we had reserves willing to fill in at the last minute, so twelve riders, horses and helpers all made their way to Hartpury on Saturday. Several different routes had to be used as the flooding was very bad. A route used by the first there in the morning was closed by about 1pm!

The indoor arena at Hartpury is fairly spooky with banners and gallery etc but most of our horses took it all very well.

There were three junior teams entered and our team: – Holly Osborne, Biz LoffetHonor Barker and Laura Ford all did lovely tests and they had two 1st places and two 2nd places.

Taking the finishing place as a mark and 3 members to count, this left them and another team with a score of 4. When the collective marks were looked at the other team were just ahead of our team so our girls finished in a very close 2nd place. So near to qualifying!!!

Looking at the score board I was impressed that the percentage marks were very close this year, when we go eventing there is often about 20 marks between 1st and last place. At this dressage there were only about 10 marks or so between 1st and last.

On the whole our riders were close to the middle of the marks for their arena, so I believe this is looking very exciting for the summer area dressage, we have a lot of new and novice combinations and they are all keen to keep improving their marks.

Sharon Gauld finished 8th in her arena and Amanda Atkinson and Emily Lycett both finished 10th in their arenas.

The full teams were;-

Yellow Team

Amanda Atkinson       Claughan Pippa

Karen Rawlins             Brogarens Aragon

Charlotte Ambrose     Fun Size

Sharon Gauld              Capaduce

Green Team

Demelza Ruane          Starflower

Emily Lycett                 Hacket

Demelza Ruane          Highway Kid

Amy Ferris                   Sandmartin

Blenheim Eventer Challenge

Blenheim International Horse Trials
6th September

The Eventer Challenge team competition at Blenheim was a lesson in how things either go right for a team or they go wrong for all team members!!

Demelza Ruane went first, she had carefully walked the course, planned lines, some quite tricky. Rory was spot on at all the difficult questions but had a very naughty stop at a large log oxer, and he was taken home in disgrace.

Lucy Graham went in second, Nimmi jumped well, but had some naughty naps in the corners (the spooky, turning, reary kind rather than the snoozy kind!!), which gave her some faults.

After a large gap two further members went in the afternoon (sadly we don’t have any photos of their rounds). The large oxer had not caused much of a problem to other teams, but when Amy Ferris came into the ring Sam had other plans. He took exception to the oxer and then had further stops having worried himself and hit his knee, so was eliminated.

Louise Hinckley was the last into the ring defending her Style title from last year. She and Nettie looked the part, glided around the arena gracefully till they got to ??? Yes the oxer!!  Nettie had obviously spoken to the others, said “NO WAY” and poor Louise had a little tumble!

Rory, who maybe started the rot and went home sooo disgraced actually finished up with the best score of the team and if the Blenheim rule had been first place to the highest scoring team, we would have won!

I am putting this all in writing, not to upset any of those who took part, but to illustrate that team competitions can go right and wrong. On the occasions when it all comes together it is really great, but when it doesn’t go to plan it’s often the same for everyone and no one should ever go home feeling they have let anyone down. This was an experienced team of riders who are well used to representing the club but it all went wrong for them this time!! I would like to encourage all members to have a go at some team competition in the coming year even if it’s only a friendly with another club.

ERC Summer Evening Dressage Series

Bourton-on-the-Water
July, August & September

ERC Summer DressageLeanne and Justin Launchbury very kindly let us use their field at Bourton-on-the-Water to hold our popular unaffiliated dressage shows. These shows are great for first timers or novice horses as they are very relaxed and low-key affairs with encouraging judge and helpers on hand in case anyone needs their test read.

We lost one date to the weather but here are the results:

Area 18 Open Dressage Qualifier

Abbey Dressage
12th August

On Sunday 12th August we had just one member taking part in the Open Dressage Qualifier at Abbey Dressage.  Stuart Nie entered the individual class for medium dressage, sadly he didn’t qualify for the championship but he scored very well and his horse looked a picture.

BRC National Horse Trials Championships

Aston-le-Walls
3rd-5th August

Report from Cathy Ruane –

As Club Chairman I thought I would have a day out and go and support our Junior members at these Championships on 3rd August. I would also have liked to have support the adults but I had a family engagement that I need to attend over the weekend. I am enjoying taking photos at events this year and as the pictures will show the juniors had a good time, and their ponies all jumped very well. The biggest excitement came in the afternoon when the commentator was heard to say that Evenlode Riding Club were in 1st place in the Junior Intermediate Team Competition.

Area 18 Novice Dressage Qualifier

Abbey Dressage
22nd July

Originally the Novice Area Dressage was to have been on the 10th June at Crown Farm but due to the weather (what else!) it was moved firstly to the 22nd July and then from Crown Farm to Abbey Dressage.

ERC had entered two senior teams of 4 and two pairs for the original date and also three junior individuals. The changes of date and venue meant that in the run up to the 22nd July three team horses had been sold, one had been turned away for the summer, and none of the original juniors could make the new date and place. Replacements were sought and some were found although only one junior. Then in the week before the competition one team horse was kicked and had stitches so it was touch and go if she would be fit to compete and she didn’t get the schooling she would have had! The stitches came out, but then two other team horses went lame, one at 6.30 am on the day of the competition!!

All this left us with just three members per team but I think everyone had a good day.

The Dickler team was:-
Karen Rawlins (our club secretary) on Brogarens Aragon (their very 1st time out competing),
Charlotte Harrington on Upstart – finished =5th in her section
Matt Waters on Delia (at his first ever Area competition)

The Windrush team was:-
Amy Ferris on Sandmartin 4th in section
Demelza Ruane on Highway Kid   =5th in section
Cathy Ruane on D’arc Angel 6th in section

The Windrush Team came 3rd!

Sadly one of the lame horses was to have been in one of the pairs, so only one pair was fit to compete on the day. Demelza and Cathy had been practicing their freestyle pairs at Bourton Vale Equestrian Centre. Very many thanks to Leanne Launchbury. Although Demelza was disappointed that the class was in the indoor school, all went to plan on the day. They were surprised and delighted with 1st place so will be off to Lincoln for the Championships in September.

Our one and only Junior was Kismet Bandeen riding Phinleys Clover, she was very pleased with her test and she was 3rd in her section.

Very well done to all who took part.

Pip Payne
Pip Payne

ERC sent two teams down to Hickstead on 22nd July to take part in the Teams of Three Showjumping competition. Team A was Jessica Rogers, Pip Payne and Amy Vowles. Jessica jumped clear, Pip had 8 penalties and Amy 16. Team B was Jamie McGuire, Holly Osborne and Louise Hinckley. Jamie unfortunately jumped one fence twice and so was eliminated but Holly and Louise jumped clear.

Area 18 Horse Trials Qualifier

Swalcliffe
30th June

It was another great day for Evenlode Riding Club at the Area 18 Horse Trials Qualifier. One of the senior novice teams was second and qualified for the championships with Sharon Gauld, Teresa Hall, Amy Vowles and Mandi Woolliams.

Here is the junior team report from Louise Woods…

Evenlode juniors had an absolutely AMAZING day at the Riding Club area qualifiers. We wiped the board – coming team first in the novice section AND the intermediate section which means both teams are through to the national championships at Aston Le Walls in August.

We had two novice teams competing. The Evenlode Eagles of Molly Tice, Bizzy Loffet (on Bob), Jess Rogers and Amber Cartlidge came in a very respectable fourth place, but the Evenlode Elite team of Holly Osbourne, Honor Barker, Bizzy Loffet (on Petal) and Olivia Hodson put in some brilliant clear rounds and rather impressive dressage scores. The results were extremely close and the team were lying in second place right up until the last moment when the XC times came in and we slipped ahead of the Frampton Family team by 10 points. Olivia was first overall on her gorgeous new horse (who is only 5!).

The intermediate team only had three members: Flo Woods, Ella Leck and Laura Smith so every score had to count, but the girls kept their cool and did brilliantly, coming in 30 points clear of the next team (Cropthorne). Flo was first overall with a dressage score of 28.9, Laura came third and Ella fourth.

I’m really proud of all of you – you looked extremely smart, behaved impeccably, and rode like demons! Well done!

Roll on the champs!

BRC Festival of the Horse National Championships

Aston-le-Walls
2nd June

The Evenlode Senior Intermediate Team came 4th at the Festival of the Horse Eventer Challenge Championships. Team members were James Loffet, Theresa Harper, Sam Kandayali and Louise Hinckley. They were also the best team based on all four scores counting although the final prizes were based on three scores. Bizzy Loffet also went to the FOTH and came 4th in the Working Hunter Pony class. Well done to all! See below for a great selection of pics courtesy of Miranda Loffet!

Area 18 Senior Showjumping Qualifier

Malvern Showground
26th May

The Novice showjumping team did well here in a big class on a very hot day! They all went clear in the first round and then jumped a second round and then a jump off to finish fourth overall. Team members were Serena Cookson, Amanda Woolliams, Hilary Ponti and Emily Lycett.

Lucy Graham jumped in the Intermediate and had an unlucky rail down in both rounds so didn’t go through to the jump off. It was the horse’s first competition at this level so a pleasing day all round!

Area 18 Junior Showjumping Qualifier

Cleeve Prior, Evesham
20th May

The junior showjumpers had a very successful day at the Area 18 qualifier at Cleeve Prior. The ‘style’ team (Bizzy Loffet riding Petal, Holly Osborne with Freddy, Jossy Munro riding Garrow Thea and Duvessa Bandeen on Suzie Two Coats) won by a massive TEN POINTS!!!! That means our riders were clearly much more stylish than any of the others! We knew that anyway but it’s nice to have rosettes to prove it!! Holly was also second individually and Duvessa was third.

In the novice team jumping ERC came 3rd with a team made up of Bizzy Loffet (Bob), Jossy Munro (Garrow Thea), Holly Osborne (Petal) and Molly Jackson (Bob – a different one!). Holly won individually by a narrow margin of 0.58 seconds and Jossy was 6th.

Well done all of you! A great achievement.

Area 18 Eventer Challenge Qualifier

Swalcliffe
31st March

The ERC juniors had a great day at Swalcliffe on 31st March. We had two novice teams, an intermediate team and one set of novice pairs.

The novice team of Bizzy Loffet, Charlotte Milner, Jack Bent and Holly Osbourne put in fantastic rounds over the course of 90cm show jumps followed by a whizz around the cross country course to come first. This means they are through to the national championships at Aston-le-walls on 3rd June.

The other novice team of Charley French, Dougal Barr, Ella Woodford-Jones and Bizzy Loffet (on a different pony) ended up coming a very respectable fourth.

The intermediate team of Charley French, Ella Leck and Charlotte Campion narrowly missed out on the chance to get to the championships by coming a very close second in the 1m section. Charlotte was the second best individual in the section.

But the novice boy pairs team of Dougal Barr and Jake Launchbury stunned us all by putting in near-perfect rounds and coming first. So they¹re through to the championships too!

Area 18 Dressage Qualifier

Hartpury College, Gloucester
11th February

We had two junior teams and one senior team lined up for the winter dressage qualifier at Hartpury in February but the icy-cold weather mean’t the event was postponed and only one junior team was able to make the re-scheduled date in the end.

ERC Junior Dressage Team
L-R: Holly Osbourne, Laura Ford, Jess Rogers, Flo Woods

Holly Osbourne, and Jess Rogers (a new girl to ERC!) rode the prelim test and Laura Ford and Flo Woods braved the novice test. Things went better than we expected for so early in the season. Flo came 3rd and Laura 4th in the novice section, with Holly and Jess’s ponies having a bit of fun spooking at all the banners in the arena, all the same coming a very respectable 7th and 11th.

When we left we were thrilled to be told we’d come team 2nd, narrowly missing out on the chance to qualify for the championships (only one team went through), but later that week the figures were double-checked and an extra name popped up on an opposing team, dropping us down to team 3rd.

We’ve still got our “2nd” rossettes though!
Big thanks to ERC mums Tonia, Sarah and Jane for their driving, enthusiasm, and for sticking it out late into the evening.
